Politikai ökológia: The European Network for Political Ecology (ENTITLE)

11 PhD Scholarships in Political Ecology

The European Network for Political Ecology (ENTITLE) offers 11 generously-funded three-year PhD scholarships available to candidates from anywhere in the world.

About ENTITLE

ENTITLE is an EU-funded Initial Training Network under the Marie Curie actions of FP7, coordinated by ICTA at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (icta.uab.es and www.eco2bcn.es) and with the collaboration of 11 research and NGO partners (Grant Agreement: 289374).

ENTITLE will train 17 researchers in the emerging field of Political Ecology, giving them the theoretical, analytical and complementary skills that will make them employable in jobs related to environmental policy analysis and advocacy. Research and training are framed around five key clusters concerned with the analysis of: environmental conflicts; environmental movements; natural disasters; changes in co-production and the commons; and environmental justice and democracy. Research is based on a series of empirically-based investigations of a geographically and thematically diverse set of case-studies. The researchers of the network will collaborate to offer a theoretical and methodological framework for the empirical research and will synthesize the results of the individual cases in a series of publishable outputs. Research will be action and policy-oriented culminating in a series of action and policy briefs targeting civil society organizations and policy-makers.
Researchers selected for the program will be trained through an integrated curriculum of local and intensive network courses on related topics, summer schools with teachers of international calibre, secondments to EJOs (environmental justice organizations) and the public and private sector and training through work. ENTITLE builds on an on-going collaboration in training between the participating institutions, manifested in a series of summer schools (www.environmentalconflicts.com). It brings together some of the world ́s top scholars in political ecology and related approaches, and overcomes the fragmentation of existing political ecological research in Europe, offering a critical mass of research and training. The researchers trained in the network will be employable in academia, public administration and EJOs.

Successful applicants will be given a 3-year contract with the fixed rates set for each country by the Marie Curie program, as well as a mobility allowance and additional funds for research-related costs. All applicants are expected to pursue a PhD in the host institute. As part of the ENTITLE training program the selected researchers will follow a set of local graduate courses and a series of network-wide training courses and summer schools. Researchers are also expected to participate actively in the management of the network and the organization of the training and dissemination activities.

“Charting the Digital” at Utrecht University

Süvít belőle a technoscience! :) Érdemes megnézni a kutatói oldalukat is!

2 PhD Researchers ERC Project “Charting the Digital”
Faculty of Humanities, Utrecht University
Salary starts at € 2,042.- and increases to € 2,612.- gross per month in the fourth year of the appointment
Respond before 01-04-2012

Job description
Two PhD positions are now available as part of the ERC funded project ”Charting the Digital: Digital Mapping Practices as New Media Cultures.”
The key objective of this research programme is to investigate to what extent and how digital maps can be considered as new techno-cultural phenomena that have altered our way of being in and moving through our spatial environments. Digital maps allow a greater degree of interaction between users and mapping interfaces than analogue maps do. Instead of just reading maps, users have far more influence on how maps look. Whether a navigation device that adjusts its route-display according to where the driver chooses to go, or a map in a computer-game that is partly created by players, maps have become more interactive and are now co-produced by their users.
This project works from the notion that digital mapping always takes place via interfaces. As the term already indicates, interfaces facilitate interaction between map and user. However, this study will not view interfaces as empty vessels that let this interaction ‘come to pass’ but as material signs that are inscribed with socio-spatial ‘programs of action’ (Latour 1999,1993).
The main task of the students will be to contribute to a critical inventory of the corpus of digital mapping practices that exist, by analysing and comparing them through this theoretical lens. The candidates will focus on how interfaces as technological artefacts act as such mediators - creating and prescribing links between users and spaces - and how they compare in this respect. The aim is to look for similarities and differences between various kinds of digital mapping interfaces in terms of what spaces they produce and connect.
For their dissertation both students will concentrate on one kind of mapping interface, that will be analysed and compared in more detail, as representing an important point in the overall spectrum of digital mapping interfaces. It will be essential that the students are able to situate this case in this broader spectrum, which requires a firm theoretical and interdisciplinary understanding of the role that digital media play in daily life.

Qualifications
Candidates with a strong background in New Media Studies, Science and Technologies Studies (STS) or Human Geography who are interested in crossing disciplinary boundaries are encouraged to apply. The positions will be available to applicants on a competitive basis and who, in their research proposal, can clearly demonstrate the academic excellence that is relevant to the project.
Apply Please send with your application a letter of motivation, a curriculum vitae, your research proposal (in English and not exceeding 1000 words) and the contact details of at least two references.

Ebben a témában beszélget:

Tamás Pál, az MTA Szociológia Kutatóintézetének korábbi elnöke
Sz. Bíró Zoltán, az MTA TTI tudományos főmunkatársa
moderál: Kemény Vagyim, a TEK korábbi igazgatója

Helyszín: BCE Sóház III-as terem

Időpont: március 6. 19:00 óra
Moszkva tér, visszatér?"

Történelmi térképek adatbázisa interaktív keresőfelülettel: Old Maps Online

A Great Britatin Historical GIS csapata (Portsmouthi Egyetem) a Klokan Technologies-zal folytatott közös munka eredményeként megnyitotta az Old Maps Online történelmi térképek számára létrehozott keresőfelületét, amely mindenki számára nyitott.
  • A Vision of Britain through Time
  • British Library
  • David Rumsey Collection
  • Moravian Library
  • National Library of Scotland
Nemcsak a kisebb területegységeket ábrázoló, nagy méretarányú, részletesebb térképeket érdemes vadászni, hanem pl. a világtérképeket is. Én például mindjárt találtam egy szemantikai elemzésre érdemes darabot, egy amerikai kartográfustól, William Channing Woodbridge (1794–1845) pennájától származó kolonialista térképet 1821-ből, amely a benépesült területek civilizációs fokának ábrázolását tűzte ki célul. Elragadó. :)
